135 people dead and 5,000 injured in multiple explosions in Beirut
People sited at least 2 explosions that ripped through Lebanon’s capital, Beirut, damaging buildings and shattering windows.
The powerful blast on Tuesday shook several parts of Beirut, sending huge plumes of smoke into the sky. Initial reports suggested the explosion took place in Beirut’s port area containing warehouses.
The blast wave from the explosion caused extensive damage to buildings within a large radius of the blast site.
“I was kilometres away; the glass broke everywhere around me,” said Al Jazeera’s Zeina Khodr, reporting from Beirut.
“The explosion was felt across the city,” she added. “There is chaos in the streets.”
Lebanon’s health ministry said that at least 78 people had died and 3,700 suffered injuries in the explosions and fire that shook Beirut on Tuesday.

The governor of Beirut port told Sky News that a team of firefighters at the scene had “disappeared” after the explosion.
“I saw a fireball and smoke billowing over Beirut. People were screaming and running, bleeding. Balconies were blown off buildings. Glass in high-rise buildings shattered and fell to the street,” said a Reuters witness.
The health minister told Reuters there was a “very high number” of injured. Al Mayadeen TV said hundreds were wounded.
The U.S. Pentagon said: “We are aware of the explosion and are concerned for the potential loss of life due to such a massive explosion.”
Possible Second Explosion reported
The possible second explosion was reported to be at the Hariri residence in the city.
Lebanon’s health minister has spoken of many injuries and extensive damage.
Local media showed people trapped beneath rubble. A witness described the first explosion as deafening.
The cause of the blast for the second explosion is not yet clear.
The latest reports come amid political tension in Lebanon, with street demonstrations against the government’s handling the worst economic crisis since the 1975-1990 civil war.
“The apartment shook horizontally and all of a sudden it felt like an explosion and the windows and doors burst open. The glass just broke. So many homes were damaged or destroyed.”Rania Masri told CNN.
